Hello friends from our GLBTQ Latino Community! Let’s talk about HIV vaccines.

It was June 1981 when the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) reported that “five homosexuals in Los Angeles had developed a rare form of pneumonia.” These were the first documented cases of what we now know as AIDS. Since that time, more than 65 million people worldwide have been infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Today, nearly 39 million people around the world are living with HIV, and there still isn’t a cure.

Looking back on the 25 plus years since the first AIDS cases were identified, we can see the devastating effect that HIV has had on our planet. The quest for a cure has been difficult to say the least, and while there has been much progress on research, treatment and prevention, today’s young people don’t seem to have the same sense of urgency about HIV we had two decades ago that is still so important to the fight against AIDS. The comfort zone that the younger generation has entered makes them the most vulnerable group to new infections. Despite the many channels of information that reach the new generation, including the tremendous power of the Internet, spreading the word about safe sex hasn’t gotten any easier. While prevention and treatment of HIV are essential, they alone cannot provide us with the one tool truly capable of ending AIDS. The development of a safe and effective HIV vaccine remains our best hope to make AIDS a disease of the past.

Prevention strategies and continuous research for an HIV vaccine are both necessary to free the world from AIDS. Community education is perhaps the most important element for the success of the HIV Prevention. Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) and drug users who use needles continue to be at high risk of HIV infection. Women also represent a growing percentage of new HIV infections. Latinos in the U.S. remain one of the groups most affected by HIV/AIDS due to obstacles like language barriers, poverty, substance abuse, and low access of quality health care services. The more that our community knows about HIV vaccine research, the more informed we will be about the challenges of HIV, and the more we will understand the importance of vaccine research to the cause of ending AIDS. The goal is to design an HIV vaccine that will be safe, effective, and available to everyone. But in order to find a vaccine that will be effective in all populations, it is vital that every community, including Latinos, participate in the research. Latinos can help the investigation simply by supporting clinical trial volunteers, serving on community advisory boards, or by volunteering for one of the many clinical trials currently taking place around the world and across the U.S.

Sometimes I forget that I am HIV positive, and of course its still there. I guess sometimes, forgetting is just one way to cope day by day.

Sometimes as I realize that I have HIV, I also realize that I have a life filled with fears, anger, sadness and many other feelings, all coming from my crude reality and my wounded heart, and that’s why sometimes I’d like to scream, and cry so hard to show how angry I am.

Sometimes I cannot find a way to let it out. I’ve been keeping it in for so long! And I guess, that’s why I have become a natural caregiver, another way to keep myself out of the loop from crying, while also keeping myself strong enough to show the positive new values, being HIV positive had given me, along with courage and anger, all transformed into passion.

Sometimes I’d like to stand at the beginning of the line to speak up and say, Hey! I do feel pain too; you’re not the only one! And my message to you is that I will not let this fucking virus win this battle, because my anger and my dreams are stronger. And those are the most important actors on this stage. I will walk back stage when it is time. Not now!

HIV, I choose you to listen to my heart, to the sound of my life with each step I take, in the love I give each time when I love, in my dreams each time when I am dreaming, when I fight with you each time when I am ill, when I fight with you each time when I hope, and when I fight with you each time when I pray. HIV, sometimes I would like to think that you are not inside my body, killing and hurting. But the truth is, I don’t think you have touched my heart yet, because, I keep dreaming of a future filled with happiness and superb moments. This is not your time yet.

HIV, I will keep walking forward, feeding my soul thinking that sometimes, you are not inside my veins, my brain, my skin, my eyes, or hiding somewhere inside stupidly undetectable! But, there’s something you should know, you would never be able to touch my soul.

HIV, my soul is something you won’t be able to reach, no matter how much you do. That’s how I will show you my payback, by not allowing you to prevail at the closing stages of this battle, our battle!

HIV, you are that something I wish to think of sometimes, only sometimes to say… Fuck you HIV!

Hay lugares súper gay dónde te puedes alojar, pero nosotros escogimos un Hotel-Boutique: Hotel Opera, frente a la casa de la Opera de Madrid y a un paso de la estación de metro del mismo nombre.  Muy cerca del Palacio Real, este hotel está ubicado en pleno centro histórico de Madrid y lo tienes todo cerca: Chueca (el barrio gay), La Gran Vía, Museos increíbles como el Museo Del Prado, El Museo Reina Sofía o el Thyssen-Bornemisza.  La fuente de Cibeles, la Puerta de Alcalá y la Puerta del Sol. El servicio está hecho a la medida y la recepción es desde “punto de cuchicheo” (¿por qué no?) hasta guía turística, ¡todos son súper simpáticos!

¿Te gusta el arte? ¿Qué te parece el cuadro “Las Meninas” de Velázquez o el cubismo en su máximo expresión con “El Guernica” de Picasso? Claro también Dalí estaría presente,  o Rubens, si lo clásico te viene más. Todo esto está disponible en los museos cercanos a este Hotel y que tú y tu pareja pueden disfrutar.

¡Por supuesto que te quieres ir de compras! Ofertas hay por doquier, pero hay dos lugares que no puedes dejar de ir: el centro comercial “El Corte Inglés” y  la tienda de ropa “Springfield”. Si les dices en el Corte Ingles que eres de América y quieres aplicar por el reembolso de impuestos, te proporcionan el documento necesario para presentar en el aeropuerto a tu regreso y poder recuperar los impuestos que, como no residente, tienes derecho a que te sean devueltos.  Springfield es una tienda de ropa, dónde los dólares extra que pagues… ¡Créeme que valdrán la pena!, pues nadie tendrá esa camisa tan chula y hermosa que tú has traído del viejo continente.

Cuando estés en cualquier ciudad, o antes de partir, checa en internet los conciertos disponibles. A nosotros nos tocó ver a Ana Belén en Madrid, en el teatro Español y a Miguel Bose en Sevilla en el Auditorio Rocío Jurado ¡Qué delicia ver a esos artistas casi mitológicos y poder gozarlo con la persona amada! Por cierto, si quieres disfrutar de una cena romántica, musical  y “dar el do de pecho”, visita el Café de la Opera de Madrid, donde encontrarás una combinación única: excelente cocina y el mejor canto lírico. Los meseros son cantantes profesionales que ciertamente te dejarán con la boca abierta…

Las experiencias culinarias en España pueden ser extraordinarias. Hay múltiples restaurantes con estrellas Michelin.  Ten en cuenta que en algunos de ellos  se requieren meses de espera para obtener una reservación y podrías quedarte con las ganas, como fue  mi caso con el restaurante “El Celler de Can Roca” en Girona-Costa Brava, con una espera de 6 meses para obtener una reservación… así que cuidado con las reservaciones y sé previsor.

El Club Allard, es un restaurante maravilloso, cerca del centro histórico y escondido en un edificio de cerca de 100 años de antigüedad.  Su chef Diego Guerrero, galardonado con dos estrellas Michelin, te dará sorpresas visuales y placeres gastronómicos fuera de este mundo.

Hay otros casos como el del restaurante “41 grados” del chef Albert Adriá (hermano de Ferrán del famoso restaurante “El Bulli”) dónde algunas veces su comida ya ha sido recreada por otros chefs y la nota de sorpresa se pierde. Pero en otras ocasiones, el genio surge y uno agradece a ese mago de la cocina por la fiesta que explota en nuestros paladares, todo en la misma experiencia. Este restaurante esta en Barcelona y en esta ciudad, aparte de la comida, no puedes perderte la arquitectura de Gaudí, máximo representante del modernismo, y el arte de Miró o Tapiez, pues ambos tienen fundaciones, y a su vez museos.

Se me está yendo el espacio y aún les tengo que decir de nuestros viajes en tren por vías de alta velocidad (AVE-Renfe). Te levantas temprano, tomas tu tren y en una hora estás en Toledo, ciudad considerada Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Su Catedral gótica es impresionante con su colección de arte: Caravaggio, El Greco, J. De Rivera, etc.  Y después de explorar esta magnífica ciudad gótica tienes que subir a tomar un café o aperitivo al Parador de Toledo para ver el atardecer. ¡Nada más romántico!

Desde Madrid hasta la preciosa ciudad de Sevilla son dos horas y media en tren. Y también hay que explorar su catedral y subir a su azotea para poder disfrutar de una maravillosa vista panorámica. El paseo cerca del río Guadalquivir, El Alcázar, El archivo de indias y la Torre de Oro son puntos necesarios en tu guía. ¿Quieres un tipo de dónde comer bien en Sevilla? El hotel EME (¡sensacional!) Tiene un bistro llamado “Santo”, está en la calle y es a veces abrumador, porque la mayoría de los restaurantes son así, pero si lo encuentras, verás la diferencia.

Creo que al final del viaje, lo que más pena da es abandonar una país donde la gente es súper cálida, siempre platica contigo y ven cómo te pueden ayudar. En lo personal yo siempre me andaba perdiendo, así es que siempre andaba pidiendo ayuda… ¡Genial! Además, en España, donde el matrimonio gay es legal desde el año 2005, sientes que no es necesario ir a un restaurante gay, o a la zona gay o al bar exclusivamente gay para sentirme cómodo…  Toda España me hizo sentir así, a gusto, contento y esas fueron las mejores vacaciones que jamás pudiéramos tener… ¡Olé!

P.D: Cuando decidimos quedarnos en el Hotel Opera, jamás nos imaginamos :

1. Que la suite iba a tener todas las amenidades y el lujurioso espacio que uno necesita para relajarse.
2. Que el personal era no solo profesional, sino también súper simpáticos (y guapos).
3. Cuando decidimos hacer viajes de uno o dos días, fue el único hotel que se prestó a cuidarnos las maletas.
4. ¡Qué vistas, Dios mío¡ Ya sea viendo el atardecer mientras estás en el jacuzzi, o tomando el café por la mañana, estas vistas son de ensueño.
5. El hotel tiene un café el cual sirve un delicioso Club Sándwich y Hamburguesas. Créemelo, las vas a necesitar. Aparte, el resto… Bueno, tú descúbrelo.

And it’s at this moment that we understand why so many of the songs by Mikel Erentxun have that untouchable ambiguous quality; the artist himself can tell you in a subtle or obvious way that he idolizes Morrisey and David Bowie, Leonard Cohen or Johnny Cash. And all of the above is tangible in this production.

When he decided to make 24 Golpes, Mikel went for the minimum, musically speaking: recording analog, basing as much as possible on guitars and voice. And his lyrics, although familiar, now are more polished.

The song Intacto is a juxtaposition between the music and the lyric. A perfect balance: romantic without being too sweet, sweet without being sticky.
“…Every absence, every time you give yourself. Everything that I love about you.”

The song 24 Golpes is an homage to Johnny Cash, while in the song Samurai we can clearly see the hand of Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz’ usual collaborator). What an amazing producer! Srta. Soledad puts the artist in a frame of touching vulnerability. This song has that slow rhythm, and for all of us that have had a broken heart, we know that this song is just one instant in those endless uneasy nights that only She, Srta. Soledad will accompany us.

Mikel Erentxun always has been a friend of the community, giving us his support, but above all, amazing music that we gays and lesbians can relate to since its music does not have gender.

As we know history was made last month when Pope Benedict XVI resigned from his position the past February the 11th. No Pope had resigned from this position since 1415. Yesterday however, history was made once again when  the first Pope from Latin America was selected. For the first time in history a Pope was selected to be the leader of the Catholic Church who is out of Europe. Argentine Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio was selected to reign  The Vatican as the spiritual leader of the Catholic empire and this gave hope to many people.

There has been a lot of momentum and many people are hopeful that things are going to change in the Catholic empire. Statistics show that the majority of Catholics are from Latin America and people are happy that we have a new hope in “Las Americas”. But, how hopeful it truly is to have a new Pope who apparently opposes the needs of our community? Gay City News called his record on LGBT rights “inflammatory.” It has been recorded that Pope Francis has different views on who we are as a community.

Pope Francis has been called by  NBC News  as prizing “compassion, humility and simplicity,” that as a Jesuit he has taken the task to work with the poor and those who are suffering. In some respects, I admire Pope’s Francis take on the understanding of the needs of the people, but if the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church is going to follow that approach it cannot be half way, it has to be equal for everyone, you can’t separate who you want to help and advocate for, there are many of us who are Trans, By, Gay or Lesbian and we cannot be put to the side by Pope Francis; it has to be all or nothing. We as a community need to understand that these views can continue to foster ignorance and hate in our Latin@ community and that his views influence the way many parents of LGBTQ Latin@s view things and make decisions based on those believes. In some cases many parents make decisions that make our lives really hard, like disowning  us or choosing to give us to the street because of who we are and because of the shame that The Catholic views oppose on our families and our neighbors.

Now more than ever we need to talk to our families to make them understand that being who we are is a gift, a gift of God and not a sin. We need to do a lot of advocacy and education to our Latin@ organizations, not only to LBGTQ organizations but to influential organizations that influence the way we think and the way we do things, because many of these organizations are influenced by the Catholic empire as well.

We do know that the views of Pope Francis are what they are but that is not to say that if we can change minds, we can change hearts. We need to continue to be visible and to show society and those powerful structures such as the Vatican,  Pope Francis and the Catholic empire and others  that as an LGBTQ Latin@ communities we are gifts of God and that we are here for a purpose and not to be judge for who we are but to be part of this world and bring the gifts that we possess as individuals to be shared with the world. They should not limit us with their narrow views, they should know and recognize that we are part of humanity and deserve our space in this earth just like anyone else.

El reciente triunfo electoral del presidente Obama define una posible política en favor de la diversidad y ésta puede ser la oportunidad de lograr los derechos necesarios para nosotros LGBT. Comentadores y analistas reportan que la contribución electoral de la comunidad latina y LGBT fueron decisivos en el triunfo de Obama. Hemos logrado nuestro cometido pero eso no resolverá los problemas a los que nos hemos confrontado por decenas de décadas. Obama durante su actual régimen probó que es parte de su cometido apoyarnos. Todos sabemos los recientes resultados, mismos que hemos celebrado con jubilo, pero que tanto queda por enfrente? Bastante, ya que no sólo estamos hablando de nuestra comunidad en general pero existen muchos otros asuntos que demandan atención presidencial. Por eso mismo, tanto como individualmente como las organizaciones que abogan por nosotros, tenemos la obligación de participar activamente para mantener nuestra causa viva y aprovechar el momento adecuado para lograr estos cometidos.
Participación activa representa mucho más que participar en los eventos LGBT que suceden durante el año. También requiere mucho más que abogar con otros a través de la palabra o participando en avenidas como ésta revista – xQsi – y los múltiples websites de nuestra causa. En realidad, el efecto más contundente sucede a nivel legislativo. Es ahí donde los aspectos legales, como la observación de nuestra constitución toma lugar. Pero nuestros legisladores tienen muchos más asuntos en sus agendas y debido al pobre apoyo social hacia nosotros, terminan complaciendo a sus electores y gente. Mismos que pueden o no, mantenerlos en su puesto de servidores públicos. Nosotros tenemos que ejercer tanta presión como sea necesaria para darles a entender que nosotros contamos y tenemos una agenda en vista. Misma que demandamos sea atendida y es parte de nuestro derecho como ciudadanos y contribuidores a nuestro país a través de nuestra labor y el respectivo pago de impuestos. Éste último en primer lugar, ya que su misión es proveer lo que necesitamos y está protegido por nuestras leyes y constitución pero necesita convertirse en un mandato federal.
Dentro de nuestra propia cause existen muchos asuntos que necesitamos resolver. Como es el caso con el derecho de matrimonio reconocido por los gobiernos estatal y federal. Éste, no tan sólo representa el símbolo de igualdad, misma que tenemos que demandar, pero las parejas casadas legalmente reciben beneficios legales que hasta el momento no son posibles. Pero también tenemos enfrente de nosotros la necesidad de la creación y observación de leyes federales que nos protegen de la misma manera que cualquier otra minoría recibe. Esto seguido de la observación y reforzar estás leyes en cualquier rincón de nuestra nación. Igualmente, prescindímos de estás, mismas que han sido negadas sin ninguna justificación legal. En pocas palabras, nuestro cometido es defender nuestro lugar como ciudadanos y ser incluidos en todos los aspectos que cualquier otro ciudadano cuenta. De hecho, al pelear nuestra causa propia. a la vez estamos peleando por el derecho a cuanto beneficio y derecho que ha sido negado y no protegido para todas las minorías de nuestro país. Como es el caso de las multitudes de familias latinas que a pesar de ser residentes de este país por muchos años, no han violado la ley de ninguna manera y su contribución local no difiere del resto de la sociedad. Reforma migratoria a estado en la mesa de la Casa Blanca y las cámaras por varias décadas y después del limitado “Perdón” del presidente republicano Reagan no se ha hecho nada al respecto, como ha sido prometido por casi todos los políticos en poder. Pero tenemos que tener en cuanto que muchos de ellos simplemente apoyan a quienes quieren a los trabajadores ingresados ilegalmente fuera del país y sin considerar ni las consecuencias, ni las aportaciones al país de estos. Hemos de recordar las décadas en las cuales los “Braceros”, como fueron denominados, fueron la fuerza que mantuvo la industria agrícola al margen de alto rendimiento y en ese entonces, no era ilegal para nuestros compatriotas trabajar en este país. Pero las promesas hacia los hombres y mujeres que sacrificaron a sus familias para proveerles y sacarlos de la miseria que sufrían, nunca se han cumplido en su totalidad.
En mi experiencia he encontrado que – tanto latinos como LGBT – demandan y apoyan nuestra causa, pero este apoyo deja no lleva los necesarios esfuerzos de estás comunidades en general. La participación de la mayoría de estos y por cualquiera que sea la razón, no ha sido la necesaria. Esto porque solamente se han limitado y no han peleado a nivel legal y legislativo.
La razón por la cual “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ha sido abolido, es directamente el resultado de la masiva intervención de muchos de nosotros, para mantenerlo en la mesa y el presidente Obama actuara. De otra manera, estaríamos en el mismo lugar de hace cuatro años. Por último, tenemos que mantener en la mira que aunque el apoyo popular ha crecido enormemente, la mayoría del pueblo niega estos derechos y lo fundan en “realidades” que de acuerdo a ellos son validas, como la religión, pero ésta no tiene lugar en lo referente a lo que nuestro gobierno apoya, niega y cambia y está basado el legalidad de estos asuntos.
No tenemos que ser políticos o estar envuelta en política para lograr hacer estos cambios durante el régimen de Obama. Existen muchísimas formas para contribuir con lo necesario. Y estoy segura que existe una forma para el estilo y capacidad de cada uno de nosotros. El primer paso es encontrar esa forma e involucrarnos. Hacer llamadas y mandar correos a los legislativos para darles a saber cual es nuestra posición en los asuntos que él puede tener una influencia. Esa es una de las formas fáciles de participar. Contribuir financieramente a los cuerpos acreditados que trabajan para nuestra causa, es otra. Así como presentarles cuales son las preferencias principales que solicitamos. Al final de cuentas, los trabajadores públicos están en esa posición gracias a nuestro apoyo, así como nosotros pagamos sus salarios. Ofrecer tiempo voluntario a la organización de tu preferencia es una excelente contribución. Asociarse con entidades de nuestro interés ofrece un sin número de opciones. El hecho importante es que no tenemos mucho tiempo para hacerlo. Aunque Obama estará en poder en los próximos cuatro años, para que logre sus objetivos, él tiene que saber primero que queremos y nuestras razones. De esa manera su equipo de trabajo seleccionado tendrá que llevar a cabo su plan de acción. Y ese es un proceso que toma mucho tiempo y por eso necesitamos todas las manos que podamos conseguir AHORA.
Seas gay, lesbiana, transgenero, latina o alguien que apoya la tolerancia, la importancia de aprovechar este momento no podría ser mayor. Además, es de la misma importancia eliminar de una vez por todas la intolerancia hacia lo que sea. De lo contrario, permitimos que ésta divida a nuestra gente y esta división no favorece a nadie. Vivimos en el Siglo XXI y los cambios en nuestras sociedades locales y externas hacia ésta meta determinaran una mejor existencia entre nosotros mismos. La fraternidad y el apoyo mutuo son de beneficio para cada individuo que se atiene a las leyes y el respeto al prójimo. Tenemos que apoyar y ejercitar el “Golden Rule”. Mismo que sólo es posible a través de la participación de cada uno de nosotros. He ahí la importancia de erradicar la falta de tolerancia y aprender que debemos respetar los derechos de otros, así como queremos ser respetados por los demás. Pero para llegar ahí, tenemos que romper las barreras que esclavizan en espíritu humano. Hacerlo a través de vivir en harmonía y en paz consigo mismo y con los demás. Así nosotros haremos a aquellos que no lo pueden ver, abran sus ojos y aprendan lo que tienen que aprender y logren su propia realización consigo mismos y no al costo de los demás.
Acción AHORA es lo que sugiero y les pido para que esta meta que todos aprobamos sea una realidad.
